Fans of John Cena would agree that seeing him take up the role of a superhero did surely take some time. The former WWE wrestler-turned-Hollywood hero has now recalled how he landed his first superhero role. For the unversed, Cena plays Peacemaker in the DC Universe film The Suicide Squad.
The actor has also recalled how he had been rejected multiple times for various superhero roles before finally landing The Suicide Squad. During a recent podcast, Cena revealed which superhero roles did he audition for, including Shazam, before working in The Suicide Squad.
In an interaction with Josh Horowitz on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, John said, “I can’t tell you how many superhero roles I’ve been rejected for. Shazam is certainly one. I think like a child, so Shazam was super interesting to me…And when I read the script, a lot of times, like… this is the thing, I don’t chase ‘I want to do this,’ I always have to read it.” Zachary Levi would eventually go on to play the role of Shazam.
During the same interaction, Cena also revealed he was rejected for a few Marvel roles, including Deadpool and Cable. “There was a brief try at the Deadpool universe, rejection. There were a few in the Marvel universe, rejected. But you know, I keep trying,” he said. According to Cena, one role he was rejected for was Cable, eventually played by Josh Brolin.
Cena, who finally did get to play a costumed superhero in DC Universe film The Suicide Squad last year, has reprised his role in the spin-off series Peacemaker, which premiered on HBO Max last week. The show, however, is not being telecast in India.
