UNPRECEDENTED Lionel Messi broke a 71-year-old record at the Copa America

Messi set impressive records on the day Argentina won against Canada in the opening match of Copa America 2024.

Argentina won against Canada with a score of 2-0. Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez were the scorers for “La Albiceleste”.

Messi in this match played the full 90 minutes. He did not have to leave the field even though he was dangerously tackled by the opponent many times. Thanks to that, “El Pulga” marked his 35th appearance in the Copa America arena .

This is a new record for the Copa America playground . Notably, the superstar currently playing for Inter Miami broke the record of former Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone, set in 1953, 71 years ago. The late Chilean goalkeeper played 34 matches at Copa America during his career.

In addition, Messi also became the first Argentine player to compete in 7 Copa America tournaments. Since 2007 until now, the former Barcelona star has never missed this tournament. In history, only Angel Romano and Alex Aguinaga have attended more Copa America tournaments than Messi with 8 times.

Messi left many marks on the day Argentina beat Canada. The star born in 1987 missed many good opportunities but still scored 8.4 points on Whoscored, the highest score in the match.

The reason Messi still receives high scores is because “El Pulga” contributed to both of Argentina’s goals. In the first goal, Messi opened the opportunity for Mac Allister to assist Alvarez. As for the second goal, he directly poked the ball to “serve” Lautaro Martinez.

Argentina fans must be very happy that Messi is both shining and healthy after Argentina’s win over Canada.
