Strange Behavior of Andre Onana in the Manchester United vs. Liverpool Match
Manchester United’s goalkeeper attracted attention when he used an unusual method during the match against Liverpool on the night of April 7th. In the first half of the match at Old Trafford, fans noticed Andre Onana applying cream to his gloves. According to the Daily Mail, this was Vaseline, a moisturizing cream for the skin. However, the Cameroonian goalkeeper applied it directly to the inside of his gloves.
“This type of cream is often used by some goalkeepers to increase grip. However, this moisturizing cream can be harmful to the surface of the gloves, causing them to deteriorate more quickly than usual,” the English newspaper explained.
This is not the first time Onana has used Vaseline on his gloves. Previously, fans also noticed the 1996-born goalkeeper doing the same thing in a match against West Ham at the end of 2023.
Onana continued to impress with his performance. Although he couldn’t help Manchester United secure a victory, the former Inter goalkeeper earned praise with 6 notable saves, particularly his efforts to block Dominik Szoboszlai’s shot in the 3rd minute. Even Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had words of praise for Onana after this impressive save.
From being a goalkeeper prone to errors, Onana has significantly improved his performance in the second half of the 2023/24 season. The €52 million contract has brought peace of mind in the goal. Additionally, his accurate distribution of the ball makes opponents cautious, preventing them from pressing too high up the pitch as they did when David De Gea was the main goalkeeper for the Red Devils.
Onana played well but not enough to help Manchester United secure 3 points. The 2-2 draw result almost eliminates their chances of reaching the top 4. At this point, they are trailing Tottenham by 11 points.
