The end of an era. Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas spoke out about their divorce. The Game of Thrones actor and the Jonas Brothers musician announced their separation in an Instagram post.

Speculation about their divorce arose when they were spotted without their wedding rings on. Their divorce was reportedly attributed to their “different lifestyles” according to a report by TMZ—the site first to break the news—which said that he’d filed the paperwork to end his marriage on September 5, 2023.

How did Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas respond to their divorce rumors? The two took to Instagram to talk about their divorce. “Statement from the two of us: ‘After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,’ ” they both shared on Instagram.

“There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,’ ” the statement concluded.

TMZ reported that the different lifestyles were the main cause of divorce. “She likes to party, he likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles,” an insider told the tabloid, which also said that he’d hired attorney Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Woods’ divorce and would be asking for joint custody of the couple’s two children, Willa born in 2020 and their other daughter, born in 2022, whose name has not been made public.

Just a day prior, Jonas seemingly rebutted the rumors he and his wife of four years were heading for a split, sharing a selfie with his wedding ring clearly still on his finger on Instagram. Understandably, fans took that to mean that the rumors were fake.

TMZ added that they were told Turner and Jonas have had “serious problems” for the good part of the year, and that “Joe has been caring for their 2 young children “pretty much all of the time,” even as his band was touring. We’re told Joe currently has both kids, as the group plays around the U.S.” People, meanwhile, reported that Jonas “had retained a divorce lawyer”, though the article noted that reps for neither star commented on the rumors.

The couple started dating in 2016. Turner recalled that she and Jonas had quite a few mutual friends try to set them up, but it just never ended up happening. She said it must have been fate, though, because “[they] were following each other on Instagram, and he direct messaged [her] one fine day, out of the blue.” Bold move! But clearly, it worked in his favor. It’s also a technique that the JoBros seem to really like. Nick Jonas slid into his now-wife’s Twitter DMs with the line, “I think we should connect.”

The two ended up tying the knot in 2019 with a surprise wedding in Las Vegas in 2019, and went through a rocky point in their relationship. Turner said it had a lot to do with her mental health. “I was going through this phase of being very mentally unwell,” the Do Revenge actress recalled. “He was, like, ‘I can’t be with you until you love yourself, I can’t see you love me more than you love yourself.’ That was something, him doing that. I think he kind of saved my life, in a way.”

Their first child, daughter Willa, was born in 2020 and their second, another daughter, in 2022. “It’s been amazing to be a dad and to learn every day more about myself and what that’s like,” Jonas told PEOPLE at the time. “It’s what life is about for me – raising the next generation,” Turner told Elle UK. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”

The couple remains private about their family life. In May 2023, Sophie Turner posted a video of Willa on Instagram but quickly deleted it. “I’m very protective of the life we’ve built,” she said in a subsequent Instagram post. “Every time Joe and I do a red carpet together, we make sure it’s for the right reason and makes sense for our careers. You never want to market yourself as a celebrity couple. It’s not that cool.”

“And my daughter never asked for any of this,” she went on. “I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It’s not something I want her to deal with unless she says, ‘This is what I want to do.’ We’re quite strict about that. We’ll encourage her to do whatever she wants but I don’t think we would professionally let her do anything until she’s 18. I also feel quite strongly about my daughter not becoming a nepotism child.”
