In the injunction, Judge Victor Torres ordered Adele’s song Million Years Ago to be removed from global platforms, including streaming services, with a fine of $8,000 for each non-compliance. If approved, the injunction would affect the Brazilian branches of Adele’s record label, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music.
Record labels are being asked to immediately stop using, copying, editing, distributing or commercializing the ballad from Adele’s 2015 album 25 .
The song was allegedly copied from the samba classic Mulheres , written by Toninho Geraes and performed by Brazilian singer Martinho Da Vila, who sued Adele for plagiarism in 2021. The song Million Years Ago was co-written by Adele and music producer Greg Kurstin .
Adele’s song has faced comparisons before, in 2015. Fans of the late Kurdish singer Ahmet Kaya compared and found similarities between Kaya’s 1985 song Acilara Tutunmak and Adele’s song when the British star’s album was released. However, no accusations of plagiarism or legal disputes were ever raised.
Adele recently wrapped up a long tour in Las Vegas, USA. Although she said she would miss the Weekends With Adele shows , the 36-year-old star is ready for a vacation.
