In the early morning of November 28, U17 Portugal defeated Austria 1-0 in the final of the World Youth Championship in Qatar.

This is the first time in history that Portugal has won the U17 World Cup, marking an important milestone in the development of youth football in the country located on the Iberian peninsula.

The only goal of the final was scored in the 32nd minute by Anisio Cabral, a young striker from Benfica. Cabral got on the end of a cross and easily slotted the ball into an empty net. This was Cabral’s 7th goal of the tournament, just one behind top scorer Johannes Moser of Austria, who also received the Golden Ball for best player of the tournament.

In the frenetic atmosphere in Doha, the young Portuguese players displayed a disciplined and solid performance and showed their mettle in decisive moments to successfully defend their fragile advantage. The championship trophy was lifted aloft by captain Rafael Quintas, ending a perfect campaign for the “Seleccao U17”.

The following summer, Ronaldo also entered the World Cup that he affirmed would be the last of his career. In previous interviews, the striker born in 1985 had announced that he would retire immediately after the Portuguese national team reached the top of the world.
