Excavation was carried out in a landfill from the Byzantine period (also known as the Byzantine period, which existed from 330 to 1453) in the ancient city of Arsuf, or Apollonia, north of Tel Aviv (Israel) ) by Israeli archaeologists. It is known that this area has been inhabited since 1,500 years ago. It is home to a long history of wine, olive oil and glass production. As a result, they have unearthed hundreds of precious artifacts, including ancient coins and gold jewelry that are still quite intact. Most of the artifacts date from the 5th to 7th centuries.
On the outskirts of the city, they found many everyday objects of the ancients such as wine presses, olive presses or tools of farmers. However, where they obtained many precious things, the most important and valuable artifacts were… the landfill of this city.
Researcher Oren Tal of Tel Aviv University and the Israel Archaeological Society said they had excavated one of the large piles of garbage that existed from ancient times with a diameter of about 30 meters. The results exceeded the expectations of scientists. They obtained a series of ancient coins, tableware, glass vases, kitchen utensils, animal bones… It is worth mentioning that some artifacts are still intact and can still be used.“In addition to the antique items, we also found 4 hundred coins, mainly from the Byzantine period. It is worth mentioning that there is a gold coin in it. In addition, we also found 200 intact Samaritan lamps, including brand new ones. There are also rings and gold jewelry,” said Oren Tal.Worth mentioning is that among the jewelry was an octagonal ring engraved with Old Testament scriptures.
“There is a ring engraved with Adonai, the name of the owner, on one side. The other side is engraved with the word “God”. This is one of the most important objects discovered in this archeology because only 12 rings of this type have been discovered so far,” said Oren Tal.
