We’re living in something of a golden age of the professional wrestler turned actor. While wrestlers have tried to make it in movies and TV for as long as there have been professional wrestlers, right now one of them, Dwayne Johnson, is arguably the biggest movie star in the entire world. At the same time, you have guys like John Cena and Dave Bautista who have established themselves as movie stars in their own right. These guys have stared each other down from across a wrestling ring, but we have yet to see them do the same on screen. Although, Cena thinks there’s a good chance he and The Rock will be in a movie together at some point down the road.
Seeing John Cena and Dwayne Johnson meet up, or potentially fight, on screen, seems like something that audiences would love to see. Fans of WWE would certainly get into it but even those that never saw the duo throwdown at WrestleMania would appreciate the nod to their shared past. At this point it’s not looking like such a moment will be happening in the short term, but Cena tells ComicBook.com that he absolutely wants it to happen. And he seems to feel that eventually it will. According to Cena…
As John Cena mentions, while he and Dwayne Johnson have been missing each other on the screen, they’ve been slowly circling each other– especially recently. Dwayne Johnson can credit Fast Five as one of the roles that helped him break out as a star and John Cena just joined the Fast & Furious franchise himself with the most recent F9. While I for one would love to see these two meet up in the next two entries, Johnson has recently stated he will not be appearing in the final two films of the franchise, so that’s apparently off the table.
However, Cena and The Rock are also both part of the DC film universe, with Cena about debut as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad and Dwayne Johnson bringing Black Adam to the screen next year. Maybe there’s an opportunity for Black Adam and Peacemaker to cross paths, but it would seem that the two characters will be occupying pretty different corners of that universe. So seeing Peacemaker and Black Adam meet seems unlikely.
It feels like John Cena is probably right and eventually the two will meet on screen. As with their battles in WWE, it feels like something that just needs to happen. And with Johnson being the huge star that he is, and Cena’s star continuing to rise, it’s only becoming more likely that it will.
