Baena, who married Plaza in 2021, died by suicide at 47 on Jan. 3.

All the stars came out to celebrate Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary, including Aubrey Plaza.

The Feb. 16 special saw the Parks and Recreation alum — who was once an intern for SNL and a page for NBC — make her first public appearance since the death of her husband Jeff Baena. Plaza stepped out to introduce musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. For the occasion, the actress donned an almost entirely black outfit, with dress pants and a blazer over a tie-dye shirt. Fans were quick to identify the outfit as a tribute to her late husband.

The significance of the tie-dye shirt goes back to Plaza’s December 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, in which she explains the nontraditional garb that she and Baena wore for their nuptials. 

“We got married on a whim, literally decided at like 5 p.m. and got married at like, 8:30,” she explained at the time. “Jeff got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine, so, I decided that Jeff and I were going to wear tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us.”

Representatives for Plaza did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

Plaza’s surprise SNL appearance comes six weeks after Baena died by suicide at 47 on Jan. 3. Plaza was slated to present at the Golden Globes the following day, but bowed out of the awards show. She also appeared in a Ritz crackers Super Bowl commercial earlier this month. The ad debuted during the big game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, but it was filmed in November, before Baena’s death.

Plaza and Baena wed in 2021, after beginning their relationship 10 years prior. They worked on a number of films together, including 2014’s Life After Beth and 2017’s The Little Hours.

In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly following news of the filmmaker’s death, Plaza and Baena’s family called his passing “an unimaginable tragedy.” They continued, “We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”
