Syven and Tori always wanted to have children, but as a transgender couple they were unsure if their dream was ever likely to become a reality.

After finding out Syven – who was assigned female at birth – was able to conceive naturally, they began their journey to have a baby, with Tori now proudly able to say: ‘My husband gave birth to our children.’

The couple are the proud parents to their one-year-old son, Prophet, and their one-month-old daughter, Wynter – but it hasn’t been totally smooth sailing for Syven and Tori, who both transitioned as kids.

Although it had always been a dream to have children, Syven admitted he was dubious when they first started trying for a baby because he had taken testosterone for ‘so long.’

‘It took so long to conceive I honestly thought it ain’t going to happen,’ he confessed.

At first, Syven was doubtful he would be able have a baby, recalling: ‘It took so long to conceive I honestly thought it ain’t going to happen’

Syven said the downside of his pregnancy was ‘being judged’ for being a pregnant man – particularly when going to his doctor

The pair were ecstatic when they found out Syven was pregnant, although they were cautious about how people would react to their unusual situation.

‘Misconceptions [people] have is that because you’re trans you can’t have kids,’ Tori said. 

She said although they had some positive comments when they told people Syven was pregnant, some ‘smirked and giggled’ when they saw him walking around with a pregnant belly.

‘The negatives were basically, “Why are you having a kid if you’re supposed to be a man,” “Men don’t have babies,” and stuff like that,’ Syven recalled.

Despite some negative responses, Syven says he loved experiencing pregnancy.

However the downside was ‘being judged’ for being a pregnant man – particularly when going to his doctor.

‘You’re a pregnant man sitting around a whole bunch of females, looking at you like “no, it can’t be,” or “why?” Or “is it possible you’re faking?”‘ he explained.

He added: ‘So it gets bad and very uncomfortable because you don’t want to hide your pregnancy.’

Syven started transitioning from ‘a very young age,’ recalling ‘he knew what he was’ when he was about five or six.

‘My transition journey was easy because I knew. Hard because of the stuff you have to deal with when you’re going through your transition,’ he said.

Sadly, he had friends and family shun him when he started taking testosterone, but added: ‘All that comes with the transition.’

‘My transition journey was good, but it was also rocky [because] I was still kind of in school,’ Tori explained. 

She continued: ‘When I was in home I was comfortable and stuff, and in school it was overwhelming.’

The couple have also faced misconceptions and judgement as parents with Tori being told she would ‘never be the mom.’

After being diagnosed with preeclampsia and a dramatic birth with Prophet, ending with Syven hemorrhaging, the couple says the only thing that matters to them now is the health and safety of their family. 

‘[Having kids] completely changes you, it matures you,’ Tori said. ‘You want nothing but your relationship and family to be healthy and its best.’

Syven said he couldn’t wait to teach and protect Prophet and Wynter as they grow up

The couple credited their close-knit extended family for making their transitions as smooth as possible, and helping them with their growing brood.

‘I honestly think my transition made my relationship with my parents closer,’ Syven said.

The pair are determined not to let the negative comments get to them, telling people who taunt them to ‘mind their own business,’ adding she and Syven are setting strong examples for their little ones.

‘People who made negative comments to us about being parents and being pregnant and trans? I think that they should keep their opinions to themselves and mind their business,’ Tori said. 

‘Because our kids are going to be successful because we are.’

The couple said they would like to see more support for pregnant trans people and their families, and encouraged other trans people considering having children to ‘go for it.’
