“I’m fighting for my life here,” the ‘Bachelor’ alum, 41, recalled thinking

Sean Lowe revealed that he was attacked by his own dog twice within 12 hours.

On March 17, the Bachelor alum, 41, posted a video on Instagram detailing the incident and showing off the injuries he sustained.

“Our family has been through something quite traumatic over the weekend,” he began, highlighting that he was debating whether or not to share their story publicly.

On March 13, Lowe said he was having friends over for a barbeque while his wife, Catherine, took their three young kids to the mall. He had the windows open and some of the smoke from the grill drifted inside the house and triggered the smoke alarm. Lowe went inside to waft the smoke away and explained that the loud sound of the alarm somehow triggered his dog, a boxer named Moose.

“He shows his teeth at me and just attacks me. I don’t mean bite and then run off — like a lot of dogs do when they’re scared or defensive — I mean attacks me,” he recalled. “I feel him ripping into the flesh of my arm and at this point I’m doing everything I possibly can just to fend this dog off…I know I’m bleeding badly.”

Lowe said it took a few minutes trying to get the dog outside and off him. However, when he was finally free, the dog was able to come back and attack him again. “I’m not trying to be dramatic but I honestly just feel like I am fighting for my life here against my dog,” he said.

The reality star said that with the help of his friends, he was able to get away from Moose, but he had significant injuries to his arm.

“I look down at my arm and…it was cut so deep and I just see blood squirting, probably a couple feet,” he said, adding that he thought he punctured an artery because there was “a pool of blood” on the floor. “I thank God that my friends were there because they were able to rush me to the ER.”

Lowe got several stitches in his arm before returning home. 

The following morning, he admitted that he was still “confused” and “heartbroken” over the incident when he was attacked for a second time while out in the yard. He explained that the door keeping Moose away wasn’t locked properly and the wind was able to blow it open, freeing the dog.

“Going through a dog attack is pretty darn traumatic. Having to re-live it less than 12 hours later, seeing that dog running straight at you, is a feeling I don’t think I ever want to experience again,” he said in the clip. “He made a B-line right at me and just lunged and started attacking me again.”

Lowe said he was screaming for help as he tried to wrestle him to the ground.

“I’ve got a hold of his collar but I know he’s ripped my arm open and I just know I’m fighting for my life here,” he shared. “I feel like if this dog gets up, he’s going to kill me.”

“It took everything I had to control this dog and I’m 220 pounds,” he continued. “If it were anyone else, he would’ve killed my children or my wife.”

The former Bachelor was able to hold the dog down for 10 minutes until the cops and ambulance arrived. He went back to the emergency room for additional stitches to his other arm.

Lowe said that the family adopted their dog from a shelter less than 3 months ago, and the attack was “bizarre” because of how affectionate he had previously been. He is now working with animal control and a no-kill shelter to figure out the best option moving forward because he will no longer keep the dog in the house with his children.

Despite the attack, Lowe said he doesn’t blame his pet.

“It wasn’t Moose’s fault. I think it’s clear he experienced a lot of trauma before we got him and had something neurologically wrong where just a switch flipped and he turned into an absolute killer, which was so weird,” he added. “He really didn’t show any signs and he was great around my kids, he was great in the house. He was just an affectionate, loving boxer.”

Sitting next to Catherine, who was in tears the entire time, Lowe ended the video by praising his wife for being an “amazing” caretaker while he recovers. He said the incident has really “taken a toll” on her but they’re doing well now.

“Overall, I’m super grateful it was me and it was not my kids or my wife. And that I made it out relatively unscathed. I’ll have scarred arms for the rest of my life but I can live with that,” he said. “From a psychological perspective, I think I’ll be okay. She’ll catch me cringing every once in a while because I keep replaying it in my mind. But I think in the long run, I’ll be okay.”
