John Cena has opened up about his WWE feud with The Rock, which stemmed from the two’s real-life beef.
The 16-time world champion appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he discussed his relationship with his fellow Fast X actor.
He admitted that things between the two seemed good now, however, there was ‘one little patch where I really messed up’.
It started back in 2011 when The Rock returned to the WWE in dramatic fashion after a year away from the business.
He had explored other ventures in Hollywood, and let’s be honest, had made a pretty successful career away from wrestling.
However, both in the storyline and in reality, Cena took exception to The Rock leaving the company and suddenly coming back to challenge him to a fight.
As someone that had dedicated themselves to the wrestling industry at that point Cena admits he did not have ‘any concept of growth or someone else’s perspectives’.
He admitted that he ‘got selfish’.
He said: “My view was, if you love something, be there every day.
“What a hypocrite I am, because I still love WWE and I can’t go all the time. And I just didn’t see that, I was so selfish.”
Cena and Dwayne Johnson would go on to main event both WrestleMania 28 and 29 with Cena pushing for the ‘main event marquee match’.
He said: “I wanted a main event marquee match because it would (be) better (for) what I thought was the business. And that’s so shortsighted and selfish.
“It worked, but it worked at the cost of two people who communicated and almost put it in jeopardy.”
However, the two have since worked together in film since that feud, and have since rekindled and settled their differences.
Cena said: “I would like to say now (it) is in a really good place.”
